Women Riders California
The California motorcycle club experience is not just for the boys! Now more than ever, women riders are coming together to form motorcycle groups and riding clubs, and for a range of reasons, including:
- As social opportunities
- To share interests
- To help their communities
- Raise money for charities
- And more
Want to be part of the action? Here’s how to get started.
Joining a California Women’s Motorcycle Club
The first thing to understand is the difference between a riding club and a true motorcycle club. The former is a more loosely-affiliated group with less stringent membership requirements – usually membership is based simply on payment of yearly dues and adherence to a common theme (Harleys only, shared cultural background, etc.).
Joining a true motorcycle club requires a probationary period of proven service to the club prior to full membership. These ‘sisterhoods’ generally have more stringent membership requirements and may feature monthly dues. In return, you receive a much more authentic membership experience: a recognized patch, regular schedule of events, social outings, and more.
If you haven’t decided yet on a group to join, it is important to do some research on the women’s motorcycle clubs in your area. For California riders, this listing of motorcycle clubs and riding clubs is a great place to begin your research.
Starting Your Own California Women’s Motorcycle Club
To open a local chapter of a national club, start the ball rolling by contacting the main club. Talk with them about your ideas and your strategy to get started. Creating a women’s motorcycle club from scratch is more difficult, but potentially more rewarding.
- Start by defining your club – Will it be a riding club or true motorcycle club? What will your membership requirements be? What do you plan to accomplish?
- Next, get your riding friends together and focus your goals – these will be your partners in the club, so take their input seriously.
- You will need to decide on a name, logo, dues, and meeting schedule.
- Lastly, you will need to promote your club and consider sanctioning from the American Motorcyclist Association.
